Academic Dismissal

Policies  > Degree Requirements > Academic Dismissal

Students must maintain a satisfactory academic record and rate of progress toward degree completion throughout their enrollment. A department or program may dismiss a student (and cancel any future enrollment) if the progress toward degree completion is unsatisfactory based on program, department, college, or university policies. Dismissal decisions will be communicated in writing to the student by the academic program (e.g., department chair, program director, or assistant/associate dean). The notification will include an explanation of the reason(s) for dismissal. Copies of this notice will be provided to the student and submitted to the Graduate School via the Graduate and Professional Student Petition. An appeal of an academic dismissal should follow the Grievance Policy .

Special professional students (JD, MD, PharmD, OD) should check with their program regarding academic dismissal policies.

Students dismissed due to unsatisfactory academic progress will not be permitted to re-enroll in a graduate degree program without special approval from the Dean of the College (or their designee) and the Dean of the Graduate School. If readmission is granted, the academic program must issue a new offer letter specifying a revised academic plan. This plan must outline the steps and timeframe required for the student to return to satisfactory academic standing and continue in the program.
