Film Studies Minor

Students seeking a minor in film studies must meet the following requirements:

1. A minimum of 18 semester hours of which at least 12 are advanced.

Included in the requirement is

COMM 1301 - Media and Society Credit Hours: 3.0

and a sequence of two courses,

COMM 3370 - History of Cinema Credit Hours: 3.0
COMM 4370 - Social Aspects of Film Credit Hours: 3.0

Students also must complete nine semester hours of electives to be selected from the following courses:

ARTH 1300 - Ways of Seeing: Art and Our Visual World Credit Hours: 3.0
COMM 2370 - Introduction to Motion Pictures Credit Hours: 3.0
COMM 3321 - Single Camera Studio Production Credit Hours: 3.0
COMM 3379 - Popular Culture and the Mass Media Credit Hours: 3.0
COMM 4328 - Broadcast and Film Dramatic Writing Credit Hours: 3.0
COMM 4375 - Propaganda and Mass Communication Credit Hours: 3.0
COMM 4376 - Economic Aspects of Mass Comm Credit Hours: 3.0
COMM 4392 - Professional Internship Credit Hours: 3.0
ENGL 4373 - Film, Text, and Politics Credit Hours: 3.0
FREN 3318 - History of French Cinema Credit Hours: 3.0 or
FREN 3319 - History of French Cinema Credit Hours: 3.0
GERM 3380 - German Women Film Directors Credit Hours: 3.0
GERM 3395 - Topics in German Cinema Credit Hours: 3.0
HIST 4314 - American History Through Film Credit Hours: 3.0
ITAL 3305 - Italian Culture Through Films Credit Hours: 3.0 or
ITAL 3306 - Italian Cinema Credit Hours: 3
MAS 3341 - Mexican American Experience Through Film Credit Hours: 3.0
PHIL 3361 - Philosophy of Art Credit Hours: 3.0
THEA 2342 - Dramatic Structures and Genres Credit Hours: 3.0
Other appropriate selected topics or interdisciplinary courses in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences approved by the School of Communication.

2. A minimum of nine semester hours in residence, of which at least six are advanced.

3. A minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average for all courses attempted in the minor at the University of Houston with at least a C in each course.
