College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences > Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program > Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Studies, Minor
Director: Prof. Elizabeth Gregory
Associate Director: Prof. Guillermo de los Reyes
Housed in the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program, the minor in LGBT Studies is available to all UH students. Academic advising is coordinated through the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program.
The minor consists of the following 18-hour requirement:
- 3 hours of Introduction to LGBT Studies (WGSS 2360 );
- 12 hours in approved LGBT studies advanced courses-6 Humanities; 6 Social Sciences;
- 3 hours in approved capstone course (WGSS 4360 : involving approved supervised research, field-based service, or internship). Students contact the faculty member teaching WGSS 4360 in the term they intend to take the course to determine an Internship. In the event that a student cannot locate a good fit internship in or before their final semester, they may arrange an Independent Study on an LGBT Studies topic (WGSS 4398) with a WGSS affiliated professor as their capstone.
At least 12 of the 18 hours must be taken in residence, of which 9 must be advanced. A minimum 2.00 grade point average is required for the minor.
The interdisciplinary nature of this minor requires students to take courses in a range of areas. In addition to WGSS 2360 - Introduction to LGBT Studies , students must take a minimum of 6 hours of approved upper-division coursework from the Humanities and a minimum of 6 hours approved coursework from the Social Sciences. A maximum of 6 hours of approved transfer courses will be accepted toward the minor, and no more than 6 semester hours in a student’s major may apply to a minor in LGBT Studies.
All upper-level WGSS-prefix courses may count toward the LGBT minor, including WGSS 3321,3322, 3350, 3351, 3360, 3395, 3396, 3398, 4350, 4360, 4395, 4398 and any other upper-level WGSS-prefix courses created in future.
WGSS-prefix courses can count toward either the Humanities or Social Science requirement, as needed.
