The College of NSM offers bachelor’s degree programs in various disciplines that meet the Texas State Board of Education requirements for the Provisional Teaching Certificate. Certification as a secondary school teacher is provided through professional education courses in the College of Education within degree programs in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Students seeking certification are provided academic advising, counseling and degree plans through the Office of the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and/or Education.
teachHOUSTON is an NSM Teacher Certification Program committed to producing outstanding high school STEM teachers and is a partnership of the University of Houston College of Education, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and local school districts. teachHOUSTON emphasizes early and on-going field-based teaching experiences, while students work to obtain a bachelor’s degree in STEM, and STEM teaching certification for grades 7-12.
The program is open to undergraduate mathematics and science majors interested in secondary STEM teaching or who want to expand their professional skills. Students graduate in four years with a degree in math or science, an approved NSM capstone, as well as teacher certification.

Qualifications for Program:
- Classified as a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
- Received a grade of B or above in Calculus I
- Earned a Cumulative GPA of 2.50
Our program has course sequences tailored for students who take their first teachHOUSTON courses as a sophomore, as well as for the student who discovers the joy of teaching later in their undergraduate career. A total of 21 semester hours are required, 9 of which must be advanced, and at least six of the nine advanced semester hours must be taken in residence. Students must earn a 2.0 minimum cumulative grade point average on courses attempted in the minor. Students must earn a 2.5 cumulative and major GPA to become certified. Students can have no more than three attempts to complete teachHOUSTON courses or seek permission from the faculty advisor. Required Courses (21 hours):
